Today is my first official blog and my goal is to provide you all with informative tidbits regarding the world of wine. Folks have been asking me if my wine book entitled My Wine Guide (made simple) is a wine 101 publication. In fact, it is Wine 101, 201 and 301 all wrapped into one book. FYI, I do not touch on chemistry nor do I go into the harvest of grapes per acre and I avoid all snobbish comments regading wine. My wish is to provide the reader with interesting easy to read facts regarding God's nectar - no more no less.
So here goes:
Did you know that there are between 4,500 and 5,000 grape varieties in the world? The countries that grow the most grape varieties are Portugal, Greece and one other. Which other country do you think is among the top three? Of the 4,500-5,000 grape varieties of which 55% are reds. In 2000, there were 51% whites but several red grape varieties have grown dramatically over the past 15 years. They are Tempranillo, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
